For those of you who follow our pages fervently you may recall the disappointment experienced when our boat trip to the Farne Islands failed to produce any sightings of a Puffin. Today we saw more puffins than we could dream of.
We travelled north on the hottest day of the year leaving temperatures of over 30 degrees behind and rolled up at RSPB Bempton Cliffs just before midday with a pleasant breeze and eighteen degrees – this is our kind of weather. After enquiring at the centre we were told there were puffins still on the cliffs.
We walked to the furthest viewing point and watched Gannets floating off the cliff edge before dropping down onto the nests. Then we saw the puffins flying into their nests but they were too fast to get a photograph. Further along the cliffs we were rewarded with some wonderful shots of a couple of puffins sitting a few metres away. A brilliant day and worth every minute of the journey.
So pleased Jane got to see the puffins as I know how disappointed she was when you went to Amble.
It was a great day out and Jane is still talking about it.
You two are amazing. Wonderful. All love liz
I lived in Bempton for a few years and you would have had to drive past the bungalow where we lived to get to the cliffs, when we lived there itwas very desolate at the cliffs, there was just an old RAF weather station, I did go back a couple of years ago, what a change,
Glad you got to see the Puffins, we couldn’t find any when we went.
Well, what a coincidence. The RSPB visitor centre is really very good, friendly staff and a small but well stocked café. The viewing places are excellent and we saw hundreds of puffins flying in to their nests but they were too fast to get a photo. All being well we’re planning to go back in the middle of June next year.
