For the past few weeks I’ve been suffering with knee pain and I don’t do pain. It started off quite mild but I thought I’d visit the doctor (an alien concept until I hit 60) just in case and he said keep exercising it. Within days of the visit (and after some exercise) I was in excruciating pain and could barely walk upstairs. Another visit to the doctor and he’s now referred me for physiotherapy.
Despite taking paracetamol four times a day and rubbing in Voltarol three times a day the pain persists to the point where I can barely walk more than a few metres. I keep trying but at the moment I soon grind to a halt. The doctor thinks it’s a torn ligament so even with physio it isn’t going to be a miracle cure. I confess to feeling a little sorry for myself and depressed that I cannot accompany Jane when she’s feeling so good at the moment.
As you probably know from Jane I have had bad knees for many years and at times been unable to walk so I can empathise with you Steve. I found the frozen peas extremely helpful and a pillow under the knee at night also helped to relieve the pain. Thankfully with regular exercise my knees are now holding up well but on the occasions when I twist them and they swell and become very painful I use Inacid 100mg (indometacin). It is a prescribed inflammatory/painkiller and for me it is in suppository form (very much the norm if you live in Italy) but according to my doctor comes in a gel form also. It is the only medication that worked for me and works for several hours. Just thought it was worth mentioning in case nothing else works for you.
Thanks Kath, yes the frozen peas work wonders along with paracetamol and Voltarol gel. After walking today for 20 minutes I’m really feeling it now so the leg is up and resting.
My doctor didn’t prescribe anything so we’ve had to purchase our own treatment – much to Jane’s disgust. I’m seeing the physio again on Monday but if it doesn’t recover in the next few weeks then it’s back to the doctor for a CT scan. Steve xx
After a visit to the physio here in Market Rasen (yes we have a sports injury clinic in the town) I’ve now got a simple exercise to do and I’m also applying a cold pack (bag of peas) 3 times a day. Still painful but give it a month and I should be back to normal (whatever that is). More physio on Monday afternoon so it’s all heading in the right direction.
Oh dear, you won’t be enjoying being unable to get about, try and get some codiene phosphate 30mg, when Don broke his leg I suggested he try them and they worked better than anything else.
Hope it eases soon
