I once heard an anti euthanasia doctor saying there was no reason why people who have terminal illness should ever be in pain. All I can say is he didn’t have any experience of palliative care because the people in St Barnabas Hospice are in pain and discomfort despite the best efforts of the doctors. The hospice staff are superb and are doing everything they can to make Jane as comfortable as possible but medicine is focussed on keeping people alive not helping them to die.
Today Jane had her share of ups and downs with stomach problems all morning. This was countered by a delightful aroma therapy session after lunch and then I took her for a wheel round the block in the cool fresh air – she loves being outside but it is such an effort to get out of bed, wrapped up and into the wheelchair. Focussing on the positives isn’t easy.
Steve, It is never easy to find the right words when replying to you especially when the words I would have chosen have already been said by your many friends. It must be exhausting for you both trying to stay positive but the love you and Jane have for one another, and for life, shines through in everything you write and hopefully goes a long way in giving you the strength to cope. Take heart in the small achievements.

Both of you we think of every day. I was on the wild flower border yesterday and thought about how you and Jane came and photographed it. I planted some primroses for you two as they are always bright and cheerful . Love to you both Julie and Nick x
What to say? Well it is a New Year and I expect to see “Fighting Jane” home with Steve and tendering her Veg patch in the Spring. Can’t wait to see you both again for a tour of the local markets so I can buy some good local Lincolnshire sausages again, which you both introduced us to!
We are all thinking of you both.

It’s so easy to sound trite and to wheel out cliché after cliché but there really are no words to cover what you’re both going through. From all the comments from your friends you could drown in a tidal wave of love. Please add mine to all the other heartfelt messages of love and admiration. It’s a long time since we were neighbours but I have very fond memories of endless cups of tea, black cats, photography and even a caravan holiday together. Happy memories and they will last forever . XXX
Dear Steve and Jane
My heart is with you as is so many others of your wonderful friends, we are all thinking of you, may that be a small comfort to you both, you are loved

Steve & Jane, it is impossible to know what to say other than you are both in my thoughts and I am full of admiration of how devoted you clearly are to each other. It is obvious from all the ‘posts’ that you have many friends who love you dearly and I truly hope that is some sort of comfort to you both. Big Hugs and much love to you both xxx
