As we approach the end of Jane’s first week in the hospice I have to repeat my initial comments that the support and care she has received has been unbeatable.
Her ankles and legs have swollen which makes walking difficult – just imagine walking around in waders filled with water. Her breathing hasn’t improved and although her bed has a view out to the garden it is easy to become institutionalised so today I persuaded her to come out for a trip in a wheelchair. There were tears – “and so it has come to being confined to a wheelchair” for someone who 18 months ago completed the London to Brighton cycle for charity. We wheeled down to Lincoln Cathedral and then about turned because she was getting a bit cold. Next time I must wrap the blanket around her legs so there are no gaps.
Hi Steve & Jane.
Sorry to hear the latest news however it sounds as if you Steve, are doing the right things by encouraging Jane to try to get out and about. Jane appears as ever to have her fighting spirit and I am sure despite the fact that Jane was a bit cold, the trip out would have lifted her spirits. Julie and I often think of you both and we send our best wishes.
Thanks Nick for your kind words of support. She’s slowly accepting that to get out she needs the wheelchair for the time being which is progress of a sort.
Steve, thank you so much for taking the time to keep us updated as there isn’t a day goes by that I don’t think of Jane and wonder how she is. It must be so hard for her to have to depend on others, when she has spent her whole life doing the opposite. Please give her my love. Kath
You are right Kath – she’s always been a giver and she struggles to accept the kindness of others but the hospice staff are working on her and she’s beginning to understand that they want to give and she deserves to be pampered a little.
Make sure you wrap her up warmly, the weather is going to be a bit colder later in the week, my love to you both,
Christy x
Oh steve, you are the most adoring and attentive husband and jane is such a fighter. I think about you both every day and oftent think about the crazy songs the girls used to sing gong home from school ‘swinging on a star’ was probably my all time favourite. Please give jane a huge and gentle hug from me. With love, liz
