A night out to watch open air theatre at Lincoln Castle in summer sounds delightful; a bit of Shakespeare at his most humorous and a play we know reasonably well (we went to see the RSC perform it at Stratford). How foolish we are to misjudge the British weather because despite the day being very warm, a brisk wind made the evening chilly to the point of being uncomfortable.
The play performed by Illyria, a travelling company, was funny as intended and gave an indication of how the travelling companies in Shakespeare’s day would have performed. They mixed the male and female leads and with only five players had to change characters and costumes with great speed. Despite the chill air we enjoyed the night.
