Rub Wax – Sane New World

ruby-wax-sane-new-world(aprIn an attempt to take our mind off the house build (it can become all consuming) Jane booked us tickets to see Ruby Wax at Newark Palace Theatre. As it is just over an hour away we stayed overnight in a Premier Inn on the outskirts of the town.

It was our first visit to Newark although Jane has walked between the stations (Newark Castle and Newark North Gate) when travelling down to London. It looked like a really friendly town steeped in history.

And so on Ruby Wax – we saw her show at the Edinburgh Festival in 2012 which dealt with depression and this one dealt more generally with mental illness. She is very funny in her approach and it makes the whole serious subject of mental illness great fun. After talking through the different aspects of twenty first century life that we are not coping with she then talks about what works for her and may work for others. It all comes down to meditation and understanding what your brain is doing. It’s a bit like if you feel a pain you focus on the pain and why it hurts with “Mindfullness” you think about the thought and what is causing it.

The second half of the show was thrown over to the audience for an open discussion which was not as good as the first half but it still had its moments.
