Windows – a critical day

windows-unveiled(jan14)Today a specialist from Velfac, our windows supplier, was on site to help get the large windows installed. This was always going to be a nail biting day because the windows were ordered from the timber frame before the frame had been delivered. The atrium top windows went in with a bit of a squeeze and it was clear that the rest of them would fit. When it came to fitting the studio windows it soon became apparent that they were too large for the opening.

atrium-closeup(jan14)After considerable head scratching it became clear that some of the timbers that had been nailed into the steel frame (yes they nail straight into steel, don’t ask me how) would need to be removed and then packed out after fitting. This isn’t an easy task and will undoubtedly add to our costs.

Although we are very pleased with the windows the suppliers, Velfac, have given inaccurate instructions about the installation and underestimated the complexity of the installation. Of course hindsight is an exact science and if we had our time over we would have given the installation to Velfac and had the windows measured after the frame had been erected.

    • Phew? Phew doesn’t cover it. At one point we were standing in the studio with builders, joiners and the window engineer with everyone scratching their heads and each others. The solution is far from straightforward but at least there is a solution – at what price? Who knows?
