Photography Brief

It’s nearly the end of November so I’ve been busy taking and editing photographs that meet the brief of Food and Shallow Depth of Field. I’m allowed to submit 2 in each category so I’ve got to make a final selection in the next few days.

I’m not sure which of the egg images or honey drips I prefer.

This is a much harder choice. To meet the brief exactly there should be a very little in focus and the rest out of focus.

We can select our favourite photo of the month. This is mine, taken on my Samsung S22 phone at Battersea Power Station.

    Hi Steve,
    I too have acquired a new camera recently…..being a Samsung S21 Ultra
    it came with a phone….. !
I bought it due to the 10x optical telephoto to take wildlife pics. Whilst it doesn’t come near to my Olympus OMD with the pro lenses, the great advantage is that I’ve usually got the phone with me!
On a workshop on close-up /macro I ran with the Dayboro Camera Collegium, by far the best pics of insects were taken on phones, much to my chagrin. I became converted.
What post-processing packages do you use? I haven’t agonised the learning curve or cost of Photoshop or even Lightroom, but Darktable is an interaesting open-source editor. Snapseed is a good on-phone app, and Topaz labs stuff is good for sharpening etc .

Hi Ian, thanks for your comment. Every month the u3a photography group debate the phone/camera question. It’s very similar to the debate about post-processing. As you say, I always have my phone with me and never miss a photo opportunity. I find the phone image software is much better than that on my DSLR Lumix G9 and requires very little post-processing other than cropping.
I use Photoshop Elements but I used to be more adept when using a pirated full version of Photoshop ten years ago. I’ve allowed my skills to atrophy.
The monthly challenge is a good motivator for me. I’m not a self starter and need someone or something to get me engaged. It keeps my creative juices flowing.
Good to read your thoughts. Steve xx
