We’d booked to see Nerina Pallot at Fruit in Hull so it made sense to stay overnight and take in the delights of the city. We had an apartment in Hideout Hotel which was in the centre of the old town with everything in easy walking distance.
Much of the city is still undergoing a major regeneration with a lot of traffic free areas and wonderful, original cobbled streets.
We had a very late lunch outside in the city centre and after refreshing ourselves we spent the early evening having a drink on the quay side. We then made our way to Fruit, an old fruit warehouse that had been turned into a bar/nightclub with a several rows of seats and a large standing area.
The support band was a brother and sister called Cattle and Cane. They did a good set before Nerina Pallot came on. Her voice has great range, great musician whether on keyboard or guitar and the backing drummer and bass guitarist were superb. It was a great evening and she surpassed my expectations.
We had decided not to have breakfast at the apartment and I’d researched a quirky place near the quay side called Thieving Harry’s. It had an interesting menu and I chose scrambled egg, salmon and avocado on sourdough bread.
I finished breakfast with an excellent flat white – the best I’ve ever had in an independent coffee shop.
The whole area is interesting with some expensive looking riverside apartments springing up along the banks of the Humber.
The journey home in the MX5 was delightful but the roof stayed up because it was threatening rain.
