A really dramatic film that brings home, in no uncertain terms, what women had to endure to obtain the vote. Violence, force feeding, rejection by their families and in the case of Emily Davison death.
What is even more amazing is the film takes place in 1912/13 but women didn’t receive full suffrage until 1928.
Of course the female cast is incredibly strong but Carey Mulligan carries the film depicting her character’s strength and weakness.
It would be difficult to say we enjoyed the film but it did engage us and we talked about it all the way home from Scunthorpe. Have things improved? Well, considering 51% of our population are women we are still talking about glass ceilings, equal pay and representation in parliament 100 years after the suffragette movement started.
