We have been looking forward to seeing Mr Turner at the cinema. Unfortunately the Scunthorpe Vue cinema which has free parking and we have free tickets for hasn’t got Mr Turner on its schedule (possibly because Scunthorpe lacks cultural demand), the Odeon in Lincoln has very expensive parking so we decided to go to the Parkway in Louth. This is a small independent cinema that was originally a theatre and the seating is not the most comfortable, in fact the leg room is so short it is quite painful.
We enjoyed the film, the cinematography was superb and a scenic match for Turner’s paintings. He was a curmudgeonly character and a man of few words but many grunts however his work was pure genius. He suffered for his art and unfortunately many of those nearest to him also suffered his emotional indifference.
After the film we walked across town to The Joseph Morton pub (Wetherspoons) for dinner and we were dragged (struggling and screaming) into a pub quiz which was incredibly easy, apart from the picture round where we couldn’t identify two of the photos. We tied for first place and shared the prize money. It was a very good night out.
Hi Jane and Steve, it is Paul here. Must say I do not always know if I am replying to your personal emails to us or if I am “broadcasting” to the world on blogs..no worries.
We were sorry to hear Jane was not so good last week and hope she is better today, but like to receive your pics of your days out, they are v good.
We are busy (this could be a long one!). I seem to be at drs etc most of the week, but am also keeping busy elsewhere..trying to find a charity I can volunteer with, I have MIND in mind but awaiting a reply.
Steve, thanks for your recommendation re my search for a new electric/hybrid bike. You mentioned the GIANT brand, which I have looked up…but sorry, I could probably get a nearly new car for those prices… I have visited 3 bike shops this week to choose the one that suits me (though I know late Nov is not the best time to get back on the bike)…looking forward to crisp mornings so I can cycle at least 4 times a week to get fit…though perhaps not ready yet to get rid of the Jaguar!
1st shop was Halfords, so expensive! And they had no elec bikes in stock, but you can order from the internet…sorry, if I am spending this much…I want to see it and try it.
2nd shop was, it turns out too specialist for me…they even showed me a bike that weighs less than 3 bags of sugar!
But I was , surprisingly, recommended to go and visit the local Mobility Centre as they now stock bikes..so I went and after getting through the various latest models of sooper scooters and wheel chairs, they did have bikes, that I liked.
So am going for a FREEGO EAGLE, try out this Friday on the road, should be good for me, I think.
On the bike theme, being middle class, I drove past Aldi this week and never been in before, I thought I ought to. Brilliant! I don’t go for the food, though it seems ok to me. I browse and do pick up dark chocolate, half the price and twice the quality of S/bury’s.
I went for the bargain bins…I found various bike stuff which I won’t bore you with except I picked up a yellow w/proof jacket for £16….Halfords are selling it for £69.00. Is it the same I am asked…don’t care, it is yellow and keeps out the rain…
Hopefully see you pre Xmas, I would quite like to go to Lincoln again re markets etc and meet up with you both.
But remember, no Xmas gifts exchange this year, a card yes, but I have just been to so many charity shops in the last 2 weeks to get rid of last years gifts…don’t really need anymore.
Keep well
Love
P, H etc
Hi Paul, it wasn’t an email but a posting on the web site so you are replying to the whole world or in the case of our blog about 30 people at most.
Sorry the bike suggestion was a bit expensive but as in most things you get what you pay for. I’ll search the web for the Freego Eagle! A visit to Aldi doesn’t sound like your thing at all. We’re regular visitors to Lidl and there cooked meats are excellent quality and much cheaper than Tesco.
If you do get up here before Christmas we’d love to meet up in Lincoln which is a truly beautiful city and has a lot more style than Northampton. Steve xx
Sounds like my kind of night, film food and fun. We’ve had mixed reviews about Mr Turner but I still want to see it.
Hi Caroline, its worth seeing because the visuals are incredible and Timothy Spall is a great actor. We loved it and are still talking about it. Steve xx
We are having a quiz night in the village hall on Friday, shame you are so far away, but I’m sure you with be there in spirit
Yes, we will be there in spirit on Friday. We went to Middle Rasen last Friday for a quiz and managed third place against some strong competition.
Very topical Steve, see today’s Times pge 19 bottom right. Middle Rasen has hit the national press, never heard of it myself. A very bizarre and sad story about its primary school. Has the world gone mad, or is it just OFSTED?
Paul
Yes, I scanned this in yesterday’s Rasen Mail. I guess despite not having a diverse cultural intake it is still possible to introduce children to other cultures by visiting other schools in urban locations. I’ll look it out in the Times to see how they interpret it.
Thanks steve. Not sure I agree. Multi cultural doesn’t mean what ofsted infers. I guess there may be many eastern europeans there. So cultural exchanges mixes should not be dictated by ofsted alone. But what works best for all.
I will now stop.but being interested in education I want to make my naive point

Hiya Paul. So what do you think Ofsted mean when it says “multicultural”. When I was at school the authorities were trying to mix different social classes with the introduction of comprehensive schools and the killing off of grammar schools. They’re still trying to mix the classes and enable social mobility so what does that tell us? I think political correctness isn’t helping the cause of an egalitarian society because we can no longer express an opinion in fear of creating a hue and cry. Love your comments.
