The Pigyard - Technical Details
The web site has been evolving
since March 2000 when we first registered pigyard.com with UK2.net. This
was the cheapest registration we could find and came highly recommended.
We were already using Tesco.net as our ISP because it was free and we were cheap skates. For no extra cost UK2 redirected pigyard.com to another ISP provided you accept their advert popping up on screen. The whole site was running at no cost, so it is not surprising that it was somewhat limited. There have been problems. Tesco.net are running UNIX servers and do not have Microsoft Web Server extensions enabled so the hit counter initially did not work. Steve learned that there were web sites which would host your hit counter for free provided you mentioned their name and gave a hyperlink. This is the hit counter currently in use. The learning curve continued and Steve extended his capabilities within Microsoft FrontPage. Well the day arrived in January 2002 when we ran out of disk space on the Tesco host and we had to look for alternatives. We dug deep into the bank account and for less than £100 have now bought 50 Mbytes of space for two years hosted by UK2.net. The result is that the advertising banner has been removed, search engines have been updated, FrontPage Server Extensions are enabled and the site has room to breath. |
